Harmonica Books

When I began studying harmonica was a long time ago. First I bought an A tuned Marine Band and then a book named Jazz Harp (Oak Pub.) by Mr. Richard Hunter. I was young and unskilled and soon I found it out of my possibilities. So I gave it up and tried by myself. 30 years later I consider Jazz Harp one of the best harmonica book ever written just a little advanced for the times (e.g., it was the first book dealing with OB ever !!). This is how I started to collect books on the harp subject.

Here I list some recent books which I find useful for any harp aficionados.

David Barrett. Complete Classic Chicago Blues Harp. Mel Bay Pub. 

David Barrett is the most prolific author of blues harmonica in the world. His teaching is clear and to the point. As the title implies this book covers extensively the Chicago Blues Harp.

David Barrett is the most prolific author of blues harmonica in the world. His teaching is clear and to the point. Basic and intermediate techniques are covered in detail.
Peter Krampert. The Encyclopedia of the Harmonica. Tatanka.

Over 700 entries. Each player is treated with a short bio and a virtually complete list of his recordings. Unusual or unexpected players are also covered, e.g., George Lowell, Buster Keaton !
Kim Field. Harmonicas, harps, and Heavy Breathers. Fireside. 

The first in-depth history of harmonica and his players ever published. The book contains profiles of the greatest harmonica players. Blues, Vaudeville Bands, Soloists, Country, Jazz, every style is covered. An essential reading.
Brendan Power. Play Irish Music on the Blues Harp. Brendan Power Pub.

I recently started loving Irish music thanks to Brendan and his recordings. Here he sheds light on his technique. Ornaments, scales and tunings are covered with useful examples. On request two specially tuned Suzuki harps (Paddy Richter tuning) are included.  
Douglas Tate. Make your harmonica work better. Centerstream.

This book contains a lot of tips to make your chromatic harmonica a true horserace.  The book carefully describes the tools needed to perform changes and improvements on each harmonica part, then goes in great detail on the "how" section. Most of the techniques can be exported to the diatonic model.
Mike Stevens. Bluegrass Harmonica. Centerstream.

Bluegrass harmonica ace, Mike Stevens reveals techniques and secrets to become a proficient bluegrass blower. OB and OD are also covered. The book comes with a CD full of examples.
Steve Baker. The Harp Handbook. Hermann Demmler Ed.

Essential. Almost everything is covered. History, construction, harp function, positions, playing techniques, styles, tunings (the best ever published), maintenance, customizing, amplification. A short player history with related discographical details is also included.
